So you indulged, now what?

For better or worse, treats will be all around this weekend, and probably into next week. Dinners will be had. Indulging is bound to occur. 

We all overdo it sometimes, that doesn't mean we fell off the wagon. 

When you cave and have candy/cake/chocolate/scones/sweets in the middle of the day or worse - middle of the morning (eek!), it's important to stop your body from going on a rollercoaster ride (a blood sugar spike followed by a huge crash, which leaves you craving more sugar and repeating the cycle). 


1. Eat a heaping spoonful of almond butter. The healthy fats will slow down the sugar rush and stabilize your blood sugar to ward off the next craving. Even better, have some celery to dip into it.


2. Drink a tall glass of water. Water won't necessarily lower your blood sugar levels, but it will prevent dehydration and assist your kidneys.

3. Snack on veggies and hummus. If you feel a snack attack coming on shortly after, reach for veggies and hummus. The veggies are alkalizing and will help restore your pH while the hummus will give you that steady, blood sugar stabilizing energy you need to power through the afternoon. 

4. Get some fresh air and take a warm bath. Did you really overdo it? Get outside for some fresh air - even a 10 minute brisk walk, followed by a warm bath with epsom salts. Sip lemon ginger tea while you read a chapter of your book, then go to bed (early - without your iPhone!). Start the next day off right (see below).

The next day

1. Upon rising, drink a tall glass of warm lemon water. This will flush your system, balance your pH, get your metabolism going, and hydrate your body. 

2. Eat a protein packed breakfast: steamed veggies (kale, collards, sweet potatoes, pepper, etc.), legumes, and a poached egg. Drizzle with olive oil, sea salt and black pepper. 

3. Pack a piece of fruit (apple, berries, pear, etc.) to stave off any lingering cravings.

4. Add fermented foods to your lunch. Top your salad with kimchi, sip miso soup, or drink kombucha to prevent yeast from flourishing and restore your gut health. Bonus - kombucha has been known to suppress appetite and mitigate cravings.

Have yourself a red velvet valentine's day


Calling all love birds!  What are you up to this Valentines Day?  Valentine's Day is actually the day my main squeeze was born, so we will be celebrating him.  He has commissioned me with making a chocolate cake... so... that should be interesting (panicking! I don't bake well!)  But I do blend well, so if you are looking for a treat that totally tastes like a treat, but is loaded with awesome nutrition, I've got you covered.  As for a chocolate cake... well... that remains to be seen.  Who needs a cake when you have chocolatey, creamy, decadent, red velvet smoothie?!  I might even eat this with a spoon next time, topped with coconut whip cream... oh my the possibilities are endless.

Red velvet smoothie 


1 - beet
1/2 - 3/4 c. - frozen strawberries/raspberries
1/2 - banana 
1/2 - avocado 
1 1/2 t. - cacao
1 c. - coconut milk (full fat is the best)
1 t. - raw honey or maple syrup
1/2 t. - vanilla 


  1. Wash and chop beet into small chunks. Keep skin on if organic. 
  2. Blend everything together, adding more milk if needed to achieve desired consistency. 
  3. Enjoy!
